Join Roger Zachary, Jim Havlena, and Kara Hagedorn for a fastpaced
trip to look for Sandhill Cranes, Golden Eagles, Merlins,
Prairie Falcons, owls, Mountain Plovers, and wintering sparrows
in a natural area of semi-desert scrub, open grassland, and foothills
of juniper. Bring lunch. Ride with leaders in vans. Time
includes 4 hours roundtrip travel. Limited

Take a creekside walk with Jennifer Moonjian up Poly Canyon
through riparian, coastal scrub, and rock outcrop communities.
Expect to see Oak Titmouse, Cedar Waxwings, Chestnut-backed
Chickadees, Nuttall’s Woodpeckers, Rufous-crowned Sparrows,
Band-tailed Pigeons and many more species. The walk will be
about 11/2 miles round trip. Visit other birding hot spots on
campus as time permits. Caravan. Limited

Learn beginning kayaking with expert Jack Beigle, who will give
you general instruction on shore. Paddle to see the Great Blue
Heron nesting area, salt marsh delta, Grassy Island, and other
bird habitats. Limit 6 doubles

34 BIRDING THE BLUFF
9:00am -10:30am ...Montaña de Oro
Discover the many species of birds that inhabit the bluffs and
rocky shore of Montaña de Oro, with State Park Docents Phil and
Carol Adams. Meet at the bluff trailhead 200 yards south of the
visitor center at Montaña de Oro State Park. Limited

35 ESTUARY WALK TO HERON ROOKERY
9:00am-10:30am ...Morro Bay State Park Marina
Join State Park Docent Liz Caldwell for an active walk along the
salt marsh and shoreline to the Heron Rookery. Learn about the
natural and man-made forces influencing the estuary and about
life in the rookery shared by Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets,
Snowy Egrets, cormorants, hummingbirds, and hawks during
nesting season. Meet at the east end of the Marina parking lot.

Explore Sweet Springs, the Audubon overlook, and other bayshore
accesses with IBA specialist Dan Cooper, and Nick Todd.
See the Pacific Black Brant and Long-billed Curlew (1% of Global
populations). Observe up to 20,000 shorebirds and 8,000 waterfowl,
with Eurasian Wigeon likely. IBA Morro Bay is one of the
most important waterbird stopover and wintering locations in

OF THE 19TH CENTURY
10:15am-12:00noon ...Natural History Museum
The works of John James Audubon, John Gould, and Louis Agassiz
Fuertez – all 19th century artists and ornithologists – continue
to inspire both the active and armchair birder of the 21st century.
Using colorful reproductions of their work, State Park Docent
Marion Enfield will discuss their works as visual reflections of
19th century culture.

*41 CALIFORNIA CONDOR RECOVERY

Join a trio of condor researchers in their pursuits to save the
California Condor. Listen to condor biologist Jan Hamber give
the historical background and history of efforts to save the species,
condor keeper Marti Jenkins talk about captive breeding
and rearing at the Los Angeles Zoo, and local biologist Steve
Schubert add information about the Hi Mountain Condor Lookout
program to monitor Condor activity.

*42 SEA OTTERS AND THE KELP FOREST

Learn about the kelp forest ecosystem and its importance while
walking along the Estero Bluffs north of Cayucos with State Park
Docents Phil and Carole Adams. Watch for sea otters foraging
or resting and learn about these fascinating mammals and the
role they play in maintaining a healthy kelp forest. Caravan.

*43 BIRD SKETCHING WORKSHOP

Join artist John Schmitt for this two-part workshop: two hours
in the classroom with lecture and class participation in drawing
techniques, and two hours out of doors to sketch from life with
one-on-one instruction and demonstration. Bring #2 pencils,
sharpener, erasers, sketchbook (min. 8.5 x 11), paper towels, plastic
bag to sit on, binoculars or spotting scope. Limited

Join Pacific Wildlife Care specialist Jeri Roberts for a presentation
on owls. Meet Hootie the Great Horned Owl, and Tyto the Barn
Owl. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to view these
nocturnal animals up close. Learn about attributes that make
them so special and their challenges coexisting with humans and
within human-modified landscapes. Learn why they are gaining
popularity with vineyard owners and farmers who understand
their value as natural pest-control agents.

Sit back and enjoy the ride as B. Moose Peterson, nationally
acclaimed wildlife photographer, shares a multimedia presentation
that provides intriguing stories behind his incredible bird
